Buying a Sofa – 3 Factors to Consider

A sofa is usually the center piece in your living room and invites the most scrutiny. It is the piece of furniture where you will entertain guests, so obviously, a lot of care must go into buying the right sofa for your home.

Traditionally, sofas were made either in leather or fabric. However, recent trends have made microfiber one of the most popular fabrics for the sofa upholestry. This light weight snythetic fiber feels great and looks amazing. Some say that it beats even leather in terms of the “warmth” of its comfort.

Before you go on a shopping spree for your sofa, there are a few things you should keep in mind. Namely:

Size
Too many people end up buying too big sofas for their rooms, making the room look smaller and cramped. A few go in the opposite direction and buy tin sofas for big rooms, giving the impression of emptiness. Others buy furniture that ends up blocking doors and windows.

Therefore, give careful thought to the dimensions of your room before you decide on a sofa. Plan ahead where you will keep the sofa and make sure that the position does not block any doors. If possible, try placing some “dummy” furniture in the planned position (use a few empty suitcases or bags) to get a feel for the dimensions of the room.

Seating
Ideally, a 3 seater sofa gives the most in terms of comfort and space. Two seaters can get cramped and are more suited to single men or women than families.

Upholstery
The “feel” of the sofa will depend a lot on the upholstery. Not just the pattern of the fabric/leather/microfiber, but the material is important too. Try out a number of options before you settle on one, as the upholstery is crucial to determining the style of the sofa.
